Cut Your Risk: Practical Ways to Safeguard Against Oral Cancer

February 3, 2025

Choosing the right oral surgeon is an important decision. The office of Danbury has a well-earned reputation for exceptional skill and a patient-centered approach. Our prioritization of comfort and patient satisfaction gives our patients confidence that they’re in superior hands when receiving professional and compassionate care.

Take a look at how to lower your risk of oral cancer.

Go big with fruits and vegetables. Being low in nutrients can change your mouth in ways that up your risk of cancer. The antioxidants and vitamins in foods such as carrots, Brussels sprouts and squash bolster your immune system, and that helps defend you. Go for five servings per day.

And speaking of fruits and veggies, don’t cook away all of their cancer-fighting qualities. Discontinue baking, boiling, broiling or steaming them when they’ve become tender and still have some life in them. Even better, eat them raw.

Give yourself lip service. We know you’re already conscientious about slathering sunscreen on your face and extremities, but what about your kisser? Your lips deserve love from lip balm with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15. Apply it often, especially in the middle of the day. And be aware that fair-skinned folks are more susceptible to lip cancer.

Quit smoking. Cigarettes, cigars and pipes are infamous causes of oral cancer. Even if you’re a long-time smoker, stopping now would be beneficial. So would ending your use of snuff tobacco. Firsthand smoke is bad; secondhand smoke isn’t great either. Hanging out with smokers increases your odds of oral cancer.

See a dentist twice a year. He (or she) will check everything—from the bottom of your tongue to the inside of your cheeks—for growths that might become cancer. The early detection of any disease is always advantageous.

Your oral health is integral to your physical well-being as well as your confidence and quality of life. Danbury’s emphasis on modern techniques and technologies reassures you that your oral surgery needs will be met with precision and care. Please call us today to make an appointment.
