Understanding Oral and Maxillofacial Conditions: When to Seek a Specialist

January 2, 2025

If you’re having a procedure with our oral surgeon at Danbury such as a wisdom tooth extraction, implants, bone grafting, TMJ treatment, or facial cosmetic surgery, rest assured you’re in the hands of an expertly trained and experienced practitioner. We offer the most advanced techniques and technology to provide optimal comfort and results.

As part of our initial consultation, we’ll outline the details about your procedure, discuss your medical history, and provide ample opportunity for questions. Today we’d like to go over some of the information we routinely provide for our patients about how to prepare for and recover after treatment, with a tip of the hat to theAmerican Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.

Beforehand, it’s advisable to have on hand soft foods like soup, yogurt, and mashed potatoes; and over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Prepare ice packs to help reduce swelling. Please note that we ask you to arrange for a ride home because of the likelihood that we’ll be using anesthesia or sedation used during the procedure.

Our guidelines for recovery will include specific instructions on aftercare and pain management, which may include rinsing with a saltwater solution, avoiding certain foods, applying ice packs, and taking prescribed medications. Please schedule plenty of rest on the day or days afterward, and use pillows to elevate your head to help reduce swelling. It’s advisable that you avoid strenuous activity to reduce irritation.

It’s important that you maintain a good oral hygiene routine, but brush your teeth gently and avoid the place where we’ve done surgery. We’ll provide specific directions on using a saltwater rinse. Drinking plenty of water will help the healing process. Limit your diet to soft foods, gradually adding solids as your mouth heals.

Thanks for choosing Danbury for your treatment. Trust us to provide the top patient experience for both comfort and results. Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
